The minimal front carries the prayer at the heart of Saint Benedict’s medal: “May the Holy Cross be my light.” The prominent back completes it: “Let not the dragon be my guide.”

Together, these words describe the choice that shaped Benedict’s entire life. He chose the Cross as his light, Christ as his center, and a life ordered toward God rather than one ruled by the shifting desires of the world.

Saint Benedict lived during a time of disorder, corruption, and spiritual confusion. He withdrew into solitude not because he hated the world, but because he wanted to hear God clearly within it. In silence and prayer, he learned to recognize the difference between the voice of Christ and every voice that promised freedom while leading the soul into deeper bondage.

Benedict remained with Christ until his hidden life began to bear fruit. Others came seeking the peace and spiritual order they saw in him, and communities began to form around a simple way of life: prayer, work, humility, obedience, hospitality, and daily conversion.

The Cross Becomes a Way of Life

For Benedict, the Cross was not merely something to admire. It was the pattern by which life had to be reordered.

To pray, “May the Holy Cross be my light,” is to ask Christ to illuminate everything within us. The Cross reveals where pride has disguised itself as strength, where attachment has disguised itself as love, and where self-will has disguised itself as freedom.

The light of the Cross does not always lead us along the easiest path. It leads us along the path where the old self can die and a new life in Christ can begin.

“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”

The second half of Benedict’s prayer is just as important: “Let not the dragon be my guide.”

The dragon rarely presents itself as destruction. It offers the easier road, the quicker satisfaction, the hidden compromise, and the promise that peace can be found without surrender. Benedict understood that every soul must choose which voice it will follow.

We cannot remain in Christ while allowing fear, pride, resentment, distraction, or appetite to quietly direct our lives. Abiding requires us to keep returning to Him, listening for His voice, and allowing His will to become the structure beneath our ordinary days.

Remain and Be Reordered

Saint Benedict did not separate prayer from daily life. Work, rest, silence, meals, hospitality, correction, and community all became places where the soul could encounter Christ.

His way was not built around dramatic spiritual moments. It was built around remaining faithful in small things, beginning again after failure, and surrendering the stubborn self-will that keeps us from receiving God’s peace.

Benedict abided in Christ, and that abiding created order where there had been chaos. His hidden surrender became a way of life that would guide countless souls toward holiness.
