The original Divine Mercy image was painted under the direction of Saint Faustina, based on her vision of Jesus with rays of red and pale light flowing from His Heart. These rays recall the blood and water that flowed from the pierced side of Christ and have become one of the most recognizable images of God’s mercy in the Catholic world.
Our Mercy design draws attention to something especially beautiful in that image. With Christ’s hand extended toward us and the light radiating from His Heart, the design almost appears as though Jesus is holding out the Eucharistic Host for us to receive. It creates a powerful connection between Divine Mercy and the Eucharist: the same Heart of Jesus who pours out His mercy for us is the same Sacred Heart of Jesus who gives Himself completely to us at every Mass.
It is a simple image with a profound Catholic message: His mercy is found in the Eucharist where Christ gives Himself to us.
