In 1531, the Virgin Mary appeared to a humble Indigenous man named Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill, near what is now Mexico City. She came clothed in a mantle of stars, standing upon the moon, and surrounded by heavenly light — a vision so full of love that it transformed a nation. Speaking gently in Juan Diego’s native Nahuatl tongue, she asked that a church be built where she appeared, so she might console and hear the prayers of her children.

When the local bishop asked for proof, Our Lady filled Juan Diego’s cloak (his tilma) with roses — blooming miraculously in the winter. As he opened it before the bishop, the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe appeared on the fabric itself — the very same image now venerated by millions and preserved to this day.

Her miraculous image bore signs of both heaven and earth — her blue-green mantle symbolizing royalty, the stars reflecting the constellations of that night, and her skin and clothing showing her closeness to the Indigenous people she came to comfort. Through her, an entire nation turned to Christ.
