At the top of the medal is the word PAX, meaning “Peace,” a hallmark of the Benedictine order. The medal’s design calls upon the power of the Cross and the name of Jesus to repel darkness and temptation.
St. Benedict of Nursia (480–547 A.D.) is known as the father of Western monasticism. Living in an age of corruption and chaos, he retreated to a cave near Subiaco, Italy, where he sought holiness through prayer, silence, and obedience to God. From his wisdom grew the Rule of St. Benedict, a guide for monastic life centered on humility, balance, and community — principles that still inspire Christians today.
Legend tells that when others tried to poison him out of jealousy, he blessed the cup, and it shattered — a sign of divine protection. This is why the medal bearing his name has long been associated with warding off spiritual and physical danger.
