Description
Saint Gianna is the Patron Saint of Mothers, Doctors, and Unborn Children and she was born in 1922 in Italy. She studied medicine and became a surgeon in 1950, focusing on pediatrics. She was drawn to mothers, babies, the elderly, and the poor. In 1961 she was faced with a choice. She became pregnant and doctors discovered a cancerous mass on her uterus. They could remove the uterus, resulting in an abortion of the baby and she would live, or remove the cancer and risk losing her own life in the process of delivering the baby.
She chose to remove the cancer, and carried the baby to term. One week after the baby was born, Gianna died from complications from delivery after surgery. This saint was willing to sacrifice her own life for the sake of her unborn child and teaches us a most important motto that we are to remember on our own path to sainthood:
