Saint Augustine may be one of the Church’s greatest conversion stories, but behind it was a mother who refused to stop praying.
Saint Monica spent years praying for her son Augustine as he wandered far from the Christian faith. She watched him search for truth in all the wrong places, yet she never gave up hope that God could reach him. Her perseverance became part of one of the most remarkable conversion stories in the history of the Church: Augustine eventually became Catholic, was baptized, became Bishop of Hippo, and was later named a Doctor of the Church.
Saint Monica has become a beloved patron for parents, spouses, and anyone praying for someone they love. Her story reminds us that prayer is never wasted, even when we cannot see what God is doing. Sometimes faithfulness looks like continuing to pray, continuing to hope, and trusting that grace can reach places we cannot.
