Before Saint Paul became the great Apostle, he was Saul: confident in who he was, certain of what he believed, and actively persecuting the followers of Jesus. Then, on the road to Damascus, everything changed. Christ appeared to him, Saul fell to the ground, and the man who thought he could see clearly was left blind. Days later, his sight was restored, but Paul would never see himself, God, or his life the same way again.
Galatians 2:20 captures the heart of that transformation. “I live, now not I; but Christ liveth in me.” Paul discovered that Christianity was more than believing things about Jesus or trying harder to become a better person. Christ desired to live in him. Paul’s old life had been broken open, and something entirely new had begun.
That same mystery is at the heart of our Catholic life. Through Baptism, the Eucharist, prayer, and a life continually surrendered to grace, Christ does not remain outside of us. He makes His dwelling within us. Saint Paul reminds us what can happen when we finally allow Jesus to become more than part of our life and let Him become the very life within us.
Not I, but Christ lives in me.
