It’s there for one reason: to remind us what true love actually costs.
Saint Valentine was a priest in the early Church who secretly married Christian couples at a time when being married as a Christian was illegal. Not discouraged. Illegal. These early Christians believed something the empire couldn’t control — that God was alive, that Jesus is God, and that Christ lives in us, just as Saint Paul wrote.
They didn’t see marriage as a social contract.
They saw it as a way to live the Truth without compromise.
Rather than living in lust and convenience, they risked their lives to be married. Why? Because they knew lust hollowed them out every time. It killed the spirit. And they chose the beauty and permanence of marriage over the safety of pleasure.
Saint Valentine helped make that possible.
He didn’t obey the emperor.
He obeyed Christ.
A decree from Rome wasn’t going to stop Christ from working through him — it never has. Truth cuts straight through human law when divine good is at stake. And it still does, if we allow Christ to live in us and work through us the same way He did in Saint Valentine.
Before Valentine was executed, he sent a final letter to the young woman whose sight he had restored, signing it simply, “From your Valentine.” It’s the only recorded line we have from him — and it says everything.
That line belongs on this shirt.
And the ash cross reminds us of something else: love isn’t sentimental.
It’s sacrificial.
This shirt isn’t about romance.
It’s about choosing Christ when it costs you something.
