Sanctus-Sanctus-Sanctus
Sanctus-Sanctus-Sanctus
The Sanctus prayer is sung as the final words of the Preface of the Eucharistic Prayer. It is part of the oldest known liturgical tradition. In 104 AD, St. Clement of Rome wrote about singing the Sanctus prayer during the liturgy! The Sanctus prayer is based in Scripture, part of which comes from Isaiah 6, which proclaims: “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the LORD of hosts, The whole earth is full of His glory.” Psalm 118:26 also proclaims, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord."
The Sanctus prayer is meant to be a moment of praise and thanksgiving for the gift of salvation. Sung as we enter the Liturgy of the Eucharist, our praises join those of the angels and saints, in thanksgiving that the gift of the Eucharist opens the door for our eternal salvation. This, and the entire Mass, are such a gift to us! We are excited to continually grow in knowledge of our faith and grow closer to Christ.
