Blessed Miguel Pro lived during one of the most difficult periods for Catholics in twentieth-century Mexico, when public practice of the Faith was severely restricted and priests were forced into hiding. Disguised and constantly on the move, Father Pro continued celebrating Mass, hearing confessions, and bringing the sacraments to Catholics in secret. In 1927, he was arrested and executed, meeting his final moments with prayer, forgiveness, and the declaration that would become forever associated with his witness: ¡Viva Cristo Rey!
Those words mean more than “Long live Christ the King.” They are a declaration that no government, culture, fear, or earthly power can take the place that belongs to Christ. Miguel Pro lived those words when doing so cost him everything, and his courage continues to inspire Catholics to profess their faith with joy and confidence today.
