These words come from the ancient prayer represented on the Medal of St. Benedict, one of the Church’s most recognizable sacramentals. At the heart of the medal is a simple contrast: the light of the Cross of Christ against everything that would lead us away from Him. St. Benedict understood the Christian life as a daily choice to follow Christ, resist evil, and remain firmly rooted in God.
The Cross is more than an image we wear or hang on a wall. It is the sign of Christ’s victory and a reminder of His invitation to take up our own crosses and follow Him. In ordinary Catholic life, that can mean choosing forgiveness, resisting temptation, enduring suffering faithfully, and continuing to turn toward Christ when another path would be easier.
