Saint Philomena
Peace Be With You, Philomena
Printed on 100% heavyweight cotton Comfort Colors Tees
The words found upon Saint Philomena’s tomb form the heart of this design: “Pax Tecum Filumena.” Peace be with you, Philomena.
Surrounding them are the ancient symbols associated with her: the anchor, the arrows, the lily, and the palm. Together, they tell the story of a young Christian whose earthly life disappeared almost completely from history, but whose hidden faithfulness was never forgotten by God.
In 1802, workers in the Catacombs of Priscilla discovered the remains of a young girl behind three terracotta tiles. When arranged together, the inscription read, “Peace be with you, Philomena.” The tiles also carried symbols that were understood as signs of virginity and martyrdom. Her relics were later taken to Mugnano del Cardinale, where devotion to her spread rapidly amid reports of extraordinary healings and conversions.
We know very little of Philomena’s earthly life with historical certainty. The familiar account of the young princess who refused an emperor and endured torture rather than abandon Christ comes from later private revelation and devotional tradition. Yet beneath the mystery remains the witness that has drawn generations to her: a young soul who belonged entirely to Jesus and whose faithfulness could not be erased by suffering, death, or centuries of silence.
A Peace the World Could Not Take
“Peace be with you” may seem like a strange message to find written over the tomb of a martyr, but Christian peace is not the promise that suffering will never reach us. It is the peace of belonging so completely to Christ that suffering cannot separate us from Him.
Philomena’s symbols reveal that kind of peace. The arrows speak of faith tested by suffering. The lily speaks of a heart consecrated entirely to Christ. The palm proclaims that death does not have the final word. The anchor represents hope that remains fixed when every earthly security has been taken away.
Her peace was not found in escaping the trial. It was found in remaining with Christ within it.
“Who then shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation? or distress? or famine? or nakedness? or danger? or persecution? or the sword?”
— Romans 8:35
The world could threaten her body, but it could not possess the deepest part of her. That belonged to Christ.
Hidden, But Not Forgotten
Philomena left behind no writings, public ministry, or recorded accomplishments. Even the details of her life were buried with her.
And yet, more than fifteen centuries later, her tomb was opened and her name began traveling throughout the world.
When her relics arrived in Mugnano, reports of miracles began to spread. Blessed Pauline Jaricot attributed a remarkable healing to Philomena’s intercession, and Saint John Vianney became one of her most devoted advocates, encouraging others to seek the help of the young martyr he lovingly called his “dear little saint.”
Philomena’s life reminds us that God does not measure fruitfulness by visibility.
A person can be unknown to the world and fully known by Heaven. A sacrifice can remain hidden for centuries and still bear fruit. A prayer whispered in darkness can become part of a story that only God can see.
Philomena remained hidden in Christ, and what appeared forgotten became a source of hope for countless souls.
“Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, sure and firm.”
— Hebrews 6:19
The anchor does not remove the storm. It holds the soul steady within it.
To abide in Christ is to remain anchored when we cannot see the shore. It is to believe that He is still present, still working, and still able to bring fruit from a life that appears small, powerless, or forgotten.
Welcome to abide
We created this shirt with a purpose:
To remember that a life hidden in Christ is never lost.
The world may not know our name. We may not understand what God is doing with our prayers, sacrifices, or suffering. But nothing offered faithfully to Him disappears.
Saint Philomena’s earthly story remains wrapped in mystery, but the message written over her resting place still speaks:
Pax tecum, Philomena.
Peace be with you.
